Severino sizzling; Arrieta, not so much
Luis Severino became the majors’ first 12- game winner Tuesday night as the Yankees beat the host Phillies 6- 0. Aaron Hicks and Didi Gregorius homered for the Yankees.
Severino ( 12- 2) struck out nine in seven dominant innings, lowering his ERA to 2.10. He has allowed three runs or fewer in 16 of 17 starts.
Jake Arrieta ( 5- 6) had another rough outing for the Phillies, who had won four consecutive series before losing two straight to the Yankees. Arrieta gave up six runs — three earned— and nine hits in five innings.
Hicks hit Arrieta’s third pitch of the game out to straightaway center for his 11th homer. Arrieta was 0- 4 with a 6.66 ERA in five starts in June after posting a 0.90 ERA in five starts last month.
An error by second baseman Cesar Hernandez led to three unearned runs in the third. Arrieta has allowed 14 unearned runs this season and has expressed frustration with the team’s defense.
Mets’ Alderson ill, stepping down
Choking back tears at a surprise news conference, Sandy Alderson, 70, announced his cancer has returned and he’s taking a leave of absence, essentially ending his tenure as the Mets’ general manager. After his announcement, the Mets snapped a seven- game losing streak, topping the Pirates 4- 3 whenWilmer Flores singled home the winning run in the 10th.
Cardinals club Kluber
Indians starter Corey Kluber ( 11- 4) was shelled for six earned runs, including a three- run homer by Jose Martinez, and was pulled after just 1‰ innings— the shortest start of his career— as the Indians fell 11- 2 to the host Cardinals.
Peralta, Brewers rude to Royals
Freddy Peralta pitched one- hit ball over seven scoreless innings and Jesus Aguilar hit one of three homers for the host Brewers, who kept control over their lead in the National League Central with a 5- 1 win over the visiting Royals. Earlier Tuesday, the Brewers put center fielder Lorenzo Cain on the 10- day disabled with a strained left groin.
