LeBron will test free- agent waters

LeBron James informed the Cavaliers he’s declining his $ 35.6 million option for next season and will become an unrestrict­ed free agent. The three- time champion is now the most coveted prize in an NBA free- agent class that includes Paul George, Chris Paul and DeMarcus Cousins, among others. Clippers center DeAndre Jordan declined his $ 24.1 million option, clearing the way for him to likely sign a free- agent deal with the Mavericks. The Mavericks declined Dirk Nowitzki’s $ 5 million team option to create additional salary- cap space for their pursuit of Jordan. The Mavs plan to re- sign Nowitzki in July. Lakers point guard Lonzo Ball reportedly is recovering from a torn meniscus in his left knee. Steve Kerr, who has won three titles with the Warriors, agreed to a contract extension that will make him one of the NBA’s highest- paid coaches.

NHL Kings lock up Doughty

Defenseman Drew Doughty agreed to an eight- year, $ 88 million contract extension through the 202627 season to stay with the Kings. Doughty has been among the NHL’s top defensemen throughout a 10- year career spent entirely with the Kings. The Capitals promoted Todd Reirden to head coach to replace

Barry Trotz. The Capitals also resigned defenseman Michal Kempny to a four- year, $ 10 million contract.

MLB Pitcher unfamiliar with nickname

Tigers pitcher Daniel Stumpf said he has no knowledge of the “spider monkey” nickname that put him at the center of Chris Bosio’s firing.

Bosio told USA Today Sports he was fired as Tigers pitching coach for saying “monkey” in the clubhouse, a reference he claims was part of a “spider monkey” nickname meant for Stumpf but was taken out of context.
