- Sun- Times wires

Mark Reynolds ( 5- for- 5) homered twice and equalled a team record by driving in a career- high 10 runs in the Nationals’ 18- 4 victory against the visiting Marlins. Reynolds hit a two- run homer in the second inning, an RBI double in the fourth, a tworun single in the fifth, a threerun homer in the sixth and a two- run single in the seventh.

Reynolds is the 15th player to have at least 10 RBI in a game and the first since the Reds’ Scooter Gennett on June 6, 2017. The Nationals’ Anthony Rendon also drove in 10 on April 30, 2017. The major- league record is 12, held by the Cardinals’ Mark Whiten ( 1993) and Jim Bottomley ( 1924).

Starter Max Scherzer ( 11- 5), who was 0- 4 in his previous five starts, pitched seven innings, allowing four runs and four hits for the Nationals, who have lost 14 straight games against the Marlins.

Severino reaches 14 wins

Luis Severino pitched five innings to earn his major- league- leading 14th win in the Yankees’ 8- 5 victory against the host Blue Jays. Severino ( 14- 2) won his fifth consecutive start, allowing three runs and five hits. Two of the hits off Severino were home runs, marking the first time this season that he has allowed more than one homer in a game. Severino has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 16 consecutive starts.

Brett Gardner connected on left- hander J. A. Happ’s first pitch of the game, the 14th leadoff homer of his career and the first time he has gone deep on the opening pitch. Aaron Judge followed with a homer, his 25th of the season.

This and that

Cole Hamels ( 4- 8) allowed seven runs ( three earned) and retired only two batters in the Rangers’ 7- 2 loss to the host Tigers. It was the shortest start since June 1, 2010, for Hamels, who had gone at least five innings in each of his first 17 starts. Rangers designated hitter Shin- Soo Choo doubled twice to extend his on- base streak to 46 games, tying Julio Franco’s club record set in 1993.

Stephen Piscotty hit a go- ahead, two- run homer in the 11th inning, and the visiting A’s rallied for a 6- 3 victory against the Indians. Indians starter Corey Kluber was denied in his bid to become the first Indians pitcher with 13 wins before the All- Star break since Gaylord Perry had 15 in 1974.

Chris Davis hit a two- run home run, but the Orioles lost 5- 4 to the host Twins for their fifth consecutive loss. Davis’ strikeout in the eighth was the 1,306th of his career, moving him past Cal Ripken Jr. for the Orioles’ franchise record.
