MIDWEST FISHING REPORT

SALMON/ TROUT: Premium time for boat fishing from the Wisconsin line to northwest Indiana. See LAKEFRONT and NORTHWEST INDIANA reports.

PERCH: Slez’s: Perch starting west of Burns Ditch in 25 to 30 feet and east of donut in 20 to 40 feet; drifting with baby roaches best. Park Bait: Lots of perch Sunday and Monday at Montrose on soft shells or minnows. Henry’s: Perch remain spotty.

AREA LAKES: Henry’s: South Side lagoons restocked with catfish.

AREA RIVERS: APPLE: Ken Gortowski: Focus on the new boundary areas of state park for smallmouth. CHICAGO: Capt. Pat Harrison: As many as eight species caught, including some smaller largemouth. Crappie and bluegills include smaller ones. FOX: Gortowski: Flow is slowing (1,160 cubic feet per second Tuesday; normal is 750). With dropping water, fish will be scattered. For smallmouth, focus on forest preserves through Batavia or Oswego to Saw Wee Kee canoe launch. Creeks are perfect. KANKAKEE: Nearing normal flow. Notable fish from Kankakee River Valley Fishing Derby, which ended Sunday, included Mike Kelly’s 14-7 pike and Daniel Guenette’s 13-8 channel catfish.

CHAIN O’LAKES: Near normal water. Triangle: Bluegills are still shallow and everywhere. Good numbers of catfish. Walleye are best on northern lakes. For crappie, focus on Petite. Muskie reports on Channel.

DELAVAN/GENEVA LAKES, WISCONSIN: GENEVA: Arden Katz: Pumpkinsee­ds, rock bass and bluegills ‘‘outstandin­g’’ in 12 to 15 feet on drop-shot with jigs and maggots. Dave Duwe: Walleye good at night, especially with wind. Largemouth on outside weed edge in 14 to 15 feet. Lakers starting down 70 to 80 feet in 108 to 120 feet. DELAVAN: Duwe: Largemouth on outside weed edge in 15 to 17 feet. Bluegills in 13 to 14 feet in same area.

LAKEFRONT: Perch at top. Andy Mikos: Fishing good from the Wreck north to Evanston in 60 to 70 feet. Coho and steelhead with the occasional king, laker or brown. Capt. Bob Poteshman: Fish started to move around, so need to move to stay with the outstandin­g fishing for chunky coho (including one to 13 pounds out of North Point) and steelhead with the occasional big king or brown. For Chicago, best has been 60 to 80 feet by the Wreck. Capt. Scott Wolfe: Out of Waukegan, limits or near limits of coho with some kings and steelhead in 60 to 120 feet. Mark the bait: You will catch salmon. Henry’s: Still smallmouth in the harbors. Capt. Pat Harrison: Seeing decent smallmouth at harbor mouths on creature baits and tubes.

NORTHERN WISCONSIN: MINOCQUA: Kurt Justice: Largemouth (twitch stickbaits early, Ned Rigs and Neko Rigs in weeds) and bluegills (deeper cabbage in 8 to 12 feet) are very good. Perch (better fish in deeper weeds) are good to very good.

NORTHWEST INDIANA: Slez’s: Coho great in 60 to 90 feet between East Chicago and Burns Ditch. Steelhead going on Trail on Voodoo jigs, spawn sacs or spinners.

ST. JOSEPH, MICHIGAN: Tackle Haven: Perch slowed when water turned. A few walleye out of river. A couple of steelhead off pier. Coho and steelhead in 80 feet and deeper. SHABBONA: Lakeside: Bass going on topwaters mornings. Walleye best on leeches on rock piles. Bluegills and catfish are on edge of weed lines. Water is 80 degrees.

WISCONSIN RIVER: Rob Abouchar: ‘‘Hot action’’ on smallmouth with topwaters early and late in Merrill keeps going.
