Pirates rally to complete sweep of Crew
With rain falling at PNC in Pittsburgh,
Josh Bell hit a game-winning, two-run double in the 10th inning to rally the Pirates to a 7-6 victory over the Brewers, capping a five-game sweep.
The Pirates (48-49) enter the All-Star break having won six straight and eight of their last nine. The Brewers fell 2½ games behind the NL Central-leading Cubs.
♦ Xander Bogaerts homered in his first at-bat a day after hitting a walk-off grand slam and drove in two runs, leading the Red Sox past the Blue Jays 5-2 to enter the All-Star break with their best record since 1949. It was the 12th win in 13 games for the AL East-leading Red Sox (68-30), who own the best record in baseball.
♦ Yasmani Grandal homered, Enrique Hernandez hit a solo shot on the first pitch in the seventh inning for the goahead run and the Dodgers rallied for a 5-3 win over the Angels to gain a split in the Freeway Series. The Dodgers ended the first half with an NL-leading 129 homers, tying their record for the most homers before the All-Star break, set in 2000.
♦ Stephen Piscotty homered for the fifth time in nine games, and the Athletics beat the Giants 6-2. The surging A’s are 21-6 since June 16, the best record in the majors during that stretch.
♦ Trevor Story led off the ninth inning with his 20th homer, and the Rockies completed a sweep of the Mariners with a 4-3 victory. The Rockies have won five in a row and 10 of 12.
Sky’s downfall continues
Courtney Vandersloot had 15 points and eight assists, but the visiting Sky (7-15) lost 107-84 to the New York Liberty. It was their sixth loss in their last seven games.
The Liberty outscored the Sky 26-8 in the third quarter to blow open a tight game.
♦ Washington Mystics and former Sky star Elena Delle Donne scored 23 points and became the fastest player in league history to reach 3,000 (148 games) in an 80-77 loss to the Atlanta Dream.
Kim sets mark in Deere Classic win
Michael Kim shot a final-round 66 to win the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Illinois, by a record-setting eight strokes. It was his first victory on the PGA Tour.
Kim finished at 27-under 257, breaking Steve Stricker’s tournament record from 2010 by one shot.
♦ Laura Davies went virtually unchallenged in the final round of the inaugural U.S. Senior Women’s Open in Wheaton, claiming the title by 10 strokes over Juli Inkster.
