Spurs deal Leonard in four-player trade

-

The Kawhi Leonard saga with the Spurs is over. So is DeMar DeRozan’s time with the Raptors.

A blockbuster trade went down Wednesday in the NBA, with the Spurs sending Leonard to the Raptors as part of a four-player deal. The Spurs got DeRozan, center Jakob Poeltl and a protected first-round draft pick in 2019, and the Raptors also acquired sharpshooter Danny Green.

For Leonard and the Spurs, there’s finally closure to a relationship that seemed fractured beyond repair and played out like a soap opera as the season went along.

Leonard was the most valuable player of the NBA Finals in 2014 and had been with the Spurs for seven seasons, though he was limited to nine games last season because of a quadriceps injury that never seemed to heal and caused the rift between him and the team. DeRozan has been in the NBA for nine seasons, all of them with the Raptors.

Breanna Stewart scored 30 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and former Niles West star Jewell Loyd added 20 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists to fuel the Storm to a 101-83 victory against the Sky at Wintrust Arena.

Allie Quigley scored 18 points and Stefanie Dolson, Diamond DeShields and Kahleah Cooper 14 each for the Sky (7-16), which lost its fourth game in a row.

After the game, the Sky said it re-signed guard Linnae Harper to a seven-day contract.

SOCCER Fire in U.S. Open Cup semis

Aleksandar Katai had a goal and an assist to fuel the Fire to a 4-0 victory against Louisville City of the United Soccer League in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup at Toyota Park. The Fire will play the Philadelphia Union, a fellow Major League Soccer member, in the semifinals Aug. 8.

Nemanja Nikolic scored in the 16th minute, Katai in the 32nd, Diego Campos in the 90th and Elliot Collier in injury time for the Fire, which also got three saves from goalkeeper Richard Sanchez.

NFL Cornerback Revis retires

Darrelle Revis, a star cornerback with the Jets and a Super Bowl winner in his lone season with the Patriots in 2014, announced his retirement on social media.

The 33-year-old Revis, who usually was charged with defending an opponent’s top receiver, said he is ‘‘closing a chapter on my life that I once dreamed of as a kid.’’ His 11-season career featured four All-Pro selections and 29 interceptions.

Titans defensive lineman Jurrell Casey told CNN he plans to protest during the national anthem this season, even if it means getting a fine. Casey raised a fist at the end of the anthem before games last season.

Titans officials had no immediate response.
