Brewers swing deal for 3B Moustakas

MLB.com reported late Friday that the Brewers acquired third baseman Mike Moustakas from the Royals for outfielder Brett Phillips and right-hander Jorge Lopez.

The deal, which was announced late in the Brewers’ 3-1 road victory against the Giants, likely means Travis Shaw will move from third base to second.

A key member of the Royals’ 2015 World Series title team, Moustakas became a free agent after last season, then signed a one-year contract in March to return to the Royals. He hit .249 with 20 homers and 62 RBI in 98 games with them this season.

In other trades of note, the Phillies acquired infielder Asdrubal Cabrera (.277, 18 homers, 58 RBI) from the Mets for Class AA righthande­r Franklyn Kilome and the Diamondbac­ks acquired infielder Eduardo Escobar (.274, 15 homers, 63 RBI) from the Twins for Class A right-hander Jhoan Duran and outfielder­s Gabriel Maciel and Ernie De La Trinidad.

Rafael Devers led off the ninth inning with a home run to tie the score, then Mookie Betts led off the 10th with a walk-off shot to lift the Red Sox to a 4-3 victory against the visiting Twins.

Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale struck out the side in the first to break his own American League record by reaching 200 strikeouts in 136 innings. He reached 200 in 141„ innings last season. He struck out 10 in six scoreless innings to lower his ERA to 2.04.

Blank OK with player protests

Falcons owner Arthur Blank said he thinks players should have the right to speak out about important issues, even though he isn’t expecting protests from his team during the national anthem this season.

Blank said Falcons players have been asked to stand during the anthem, just like last season, but he also said players have ‘‘very significan­t rights’’ and implied he wouldn’t fine them for exercising those rights.

Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett suffered a torn Achilles tendon during a conditioni­ng test on the eve of the team reporting to training camp. The Chargers said they will do more tests to determine the severity of the injury, but they fear he might miss the season.

The NFL suspended Jets receiver ArDarius Stewart without pay for the first two games of the regular season for violating its policy on performanc­e-enhancing substances. Stewart can return to the Jets’ active roster Sept. 17.

Rockets, Capela strike $90M deal

Restricted free-agent center Clint Capela signed a five-year, $90 million contract extension with the Rockets. Capela, 24, averaged 13.9 points, 10.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots last season to help the Rockets reach the Western Conference finals.

Alabama and football coach Nick Saban agreed to terms on an eightyear, $74.4 million contract that runs through the 2025 season and raises his average annual salary to an NCAA-leading $9.3 million per season.

Kevin Tway shot a 7-under-par 65 to take a one-stroke lead over Whee Kim and Keegan Bradley after the second round of the Canadian Open in Oakville, Ontario. Tway completed 36 holes at 13-under 131.
