Brewers add Schoop to their infield options

-

The Brewers acquired second baseman Jonathan Schoop in a trade-deadline deal Tuesday with the Orioles, adding another option to a crowded infield as they make a push for the playoffs.

Schoop, 26, was the second infielder the Brewers — who sent infielder Jonathan Villar and two prospects to the Orioles — acquired in the last few days before the nonwaiver deadline. They also dealt for Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas.

After acquiring Moustakas, the plan seemed to be for left-handed-hitting third baseman Travis Shaw to shift to second. Schoop now gives the Brewers a right-handed option at second.

‘‘Really, what it comes down to for us is we think we’re getting better and we think we’re adding to our overall depth,’’ general manager David Stearns said.

Surging Pirates deal for Archer

The surging Pirates bolstered their starting rotation by acquiring right-hander Chris Archer from the Rays for outfield prospect Austin Meadows, right-hander Tyler Glasnow and a player to be named.

Archer, 29, was 3-5 with a 4.31 ERA in 17 starts for the Rays. He gives the Pirates a significant jolt in experience in a rotation that includes three starters — Jameson Taillon, Trevor Williams and Joe Musgrove — 26 or younger.

The Pirates beat the Cubs 5-4 on Tuesday for their 16th victory in their last 20 games.

Dodgers obtain Dozier from Twins

The Dodgers continued to revamp their infield by acquiring second baseman Brian Dozier, who hit 42 home runs in 2016, from the Twins for infielder Logan Forsythe and two minor-leaguers.

Dozier, who became the fifth player traded by the Twins in the last five days, will join a Dodgers team aiming for a return trip to the World Series. The Dodgers went all in by acquiring Orioles shortstop Manny Machado for five prospects at the All-Star break.

Other trades of note

The Phillies made a move to bolster their offense by acquiring catcher Wilson Ramos from the Rays for a player to be named or cash. Ramos batted .297 with 14 homers and 53 RBI for the Rays but is on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

The Braves acquired right-hander Kevin Gausman and reliever Darren O’Day from the Orioles for four prospects. It was the second deal between the teams in three days. The Braves acquired reliever Brad Brach from the Orioles on Sunday.

The Cardinals traded outfielder Tommy Pham to the Rays for three minor-leaguers in a move that acknowledges they likely will miss the playoffs for a third consecutive season for the first time since 1997-99.

The Indians acquired outfielder Leonys Martin from the Tigers for a minor-leaguer. Martin is a steady hitter and an above-average fielder who leads American League outfielders with nine assists.

Red Sox put ace Sale on DL

The Red Sox put ace left-hander Chris Sale on the disabled list with inflammation in his pitching shoulder. The move means Sale, who is 11-4 with an AL-leading 2.04 ERA and a major-league-leading 207 strikeouts in 141 innings, won’t pitch this weekend against the archrival Yankees.

Yanks’ Happ has hand, foot, mouth illness

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said left-hander J.A. Happ, whom the team acquired last week from the Blue Jays, has been diagnosed with a mild case of hand, foot and mouth disease. Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard is on the disabled list with the disease.
