BRIG. Gen. John P. Hughes, Sr. USAF/IL-ANG, Ret. Age 69, of O’Fallon, IL, born on April 11, 1949 in Evergreen Park, IL, died on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at his residence.

John P. Hughes Sr. was a man defined by his family and the people he touched through tireless dedication to service of his country and community. "Service before self” was more than a phrase to him, it was his way of life. He served as a husband, father, General, community leader, role-model and much more. He will be forever missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy will live on through his family and countless friends, and we are all so grateful for the time and beautiful moments we shared with him. He is loved, now and forever.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jacqueline Marie Hughes; his parents, Thomas A. and Kathleen M., nee Doyle, Hughes; and his brothers, Thomas and Terrance Hughes.

John is survived by his wife, Ellen E. Hughes (nee Koth); his children, John P. Hughes, Jr., of St. Louis, MO and Julie A. Hughes of St. Louis, MO; his twin sister, Kathleen M. Logan of Beecher, IL and his sister, Nancy A. Tresch of Las Vegas, NV; his nephew Michael Tresch, CFD, of Chicago, IL and his beloved schnauzers, Nellie and Sophie.

True to his character, John wanted his passing to help our service families in need. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 9, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Palos Gaidas Chapel, 11028 SW Highway, Palos Hills, IL 60465. Prayers will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, August 10, 2018 at Palos Gaidas Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 10, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. at Saint Linus Church, 10300 S. Lawler Ave., Oak Lawn, IL 60453 with Fr. Mark Walter officiatin­g. Interment will be held in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Alsip, IL. Services entrusted by Kassly Mortuary, Ltd. , Fairview Heights, IL.
