Sky end season on losing note

Candice Dupree and Cappie Pondexter scored 22 points apiece, and the Fever used a 20-4 burst late in the third quarter to take control on their way to a 97-92 victory Sunday against the Sky in the season finale for both teams at Wintrust Arena.

Kelsey Mitchell and Tiffany Mitchell each added 14 points and Natalie Achonwa 11 for the Fever, who ended a five-game losing streak but still finished with the WNBA’s worst record at 6-28.

Diamond DeShields scored 19 of her 27 points in the first half for the Sky (13-21), who also got 12 points from Cheyenne Parker and 11 from Stefanie Dolson.

Astros’ Verlander earns 200th victory

Justin Verlander pitched just well enough to earn his 200th career victory, and the visiting Astros hit five home runs — including a tiebreakin­g shot by Evan Gattis in the fourth inning

— en route to a 9-4 victory against the Athletics that enabled them to regain sole possession of first place in the American League West.

Verlander (12-8) allowed four runs and seven hits, including three homers, in 5„ innings but still managed to become the 114th pitcher in majorleagu­e history to reach 200 victories. He is 200-122 in 14 seasons.

Clayton Kershaw (6-5) yielded one run and four hits in seven innings to notch his 150th career victory, and Justin Turner homered and drove in five runs to power the Dodgers past the host Mariners 12-1. Kershaw is 150-69 in his 11-year career.

Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius was taken to the hospital for tests on his left heel after colliding with Blue Jays first baseman Kendrys Morales while beating out an infield single in the first inning.

IndyCar driver airlifted to hospital after crash

Driver Robert Wickens was admitted to a hospital with injuries to his legs, right arm and spine and a bruised lung after a violent wreck sent him airborne and into a fence near the start of a race at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvan­ia. An IndyCar spokesman said Wickens, 29, was awake and alert as he was airlifted to a hospital in nearby Allentown. Alexander Rossi won the race after a long delay.

Brandt Snedeker earned his first PGA Tour victory in two years, closing with a 5-under-par 65 to win the Wyndham Championsh­ip in Greensboro, North Carolina. His 72-hole total of 21-under 259 was three strokes better than C.T. Pan and Webb Simpson.

Tenth-seeded Novak Djokovic became the first player to win all nine ATP Masters Series events in a career by defeating second-seeded Roger Federer 6-4, 6-4 in the final of the Western & Southern Open in Mason, Ohio.
