Skins eyeing RB Peterson

-

The Redskins will host free-agent running back Adrian Peterson on Monday after meeting with free-agent running back Jamaal Charles on Sunday.

The Redskins have been hit with several injuries at running back. They lost rookie Derrius Guice to a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament in their preseason opener, and Samaje Perine and Byron Marshall are out with ankle injuries. That left them with only three healthy backs and a desire to add more, which led them to Peterson.

‘‘I fly in [Sunday],’’ Peterson, who played for the Saints and Cardinals last season, told ESPN. ‘‘I’m down for working out or whatever I have to do to make the team.’’

QB McCarron getting second opinion

Bills quarterback AJ McCarron is getting a second opinion to determine the severity of an injury to his right (throwing) shoulder he suffered in the second quarter of a preseason game Friday against the Browns.

Coach Sean McDermott said he could not provide an update on McCarron, whom the Buffalo News reported suffered a broken collarbone, because tests on the shoulder were not ‘‘totally conclusive.’’

McCarron’s injury opens the door for rookie first-round pick Josh Allen or returning backup Nathan Peterman to land the starting job.

This and that

The Packers activated linebacker Nick Perry from the physically unable-to-perform list and allowed him to start practicing. Perry missed the Packers’ entire offseason program after having offseason ankle surgery.

Multiple outlets reported the Cowboys’ Zack Martin — the highest-paid guard in the NFL — has no structural damage in the hyperextended left knee he suffered in a preseason game Saturday against the Bengals.

The Chiefs signed cornerback Orlando Scandrick to a one-year contract that might be worth up to $1.5 million. Scandrick signed a two-year, $10 million deal with the Redskins in March but was released Tuesday.
