Stanton wins in return to Miami

-

Giancarlo Stanton went 2-for-6 with a double and three strikeouts in his return Tuesday to Miami, but the Yankees slipped past the Marlins 2-1 on a sacrifice fly by Miguel Andujar in the 12th inning.

Stanton was playing his first game in Miami since the Marlins traded him to the Yankees during the offseason. He hit .268 with 267 home runs and 672 RBI in eight seasons with the Marlins and was the National League’s most valuable player last season.

Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman left after only six pitches in the 12th when his sore left knee flared up. He walked the only batter he faced and will have an MRI exam to determine the source of the pain.

Before the game, the Yankees put shortstop Didi Gregorius on the 10-day disabled list with a bruised left heel suffered in a collision at first base Sunday.

Hip injury might end Posey’s season

Giants catcher Buster Posey might need hip surgery that would end his season. Posey has been dealing with hip trouble for much of the season and got a cortisone injection and missed the All-Star Game last month.

Posey is hitting .286 with five home runs and 40 RBI this season. Since the All-Star break, he is hitting .283 with no homers and nine RBI.

Rays’ Snell making history

Blake Snell (15-5) extended his streak of home starts during which he has allowed one earned run or fewer to 13 — the longest such stretch in the majors since 1913, according to the Elias Sports Bureau — to help the Rays defeat the Royals 4-1.

This and that

Marlins right-hander Jose Urena dropped his appeal of a six-game suspension for intentionally hitting Braves rookie outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. with a pitch last Wednesday.

The Nationals traded first baseman Matt Adams to the Cardinals for $50,000. Adams hit .257 with 18 homers and 48 RBI with the Nationals.
