Sens executive steps down

Senators assistant general manager Randy Lee resigned Tuesday amid charges of harassment stemming from an incident at the NHL scouting combine in May.

Lee, who had been suspended by the Senators, said in a statement he is not in a position to fulfill his obligation­s with the team while his legal case is ongoing. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of making lewd comments and rubbing the shoulders of a 19-year-old male shuttle driver at the combine in Buffalo, New York.

Wickens has surgery on spine

IndyCar driver Robert Wickens had titanium rods and screws placed in his spine to stabilize a fracture associated with a spinalcord injury suffered in a violent crash Sunday at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvan­ia. IndyCar said in a statement the severity of the spinal-cord injury was unknown.

Wickens is expected to undergo more surgeries to treat fractures in his legs and right forearm. He remains in stable condition at a hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvan­ia.

LSU lineman hit with sex-assault charge

Authoritie­s in Dallas said LSU offensive lineman Ed Ingram was arrested on sexual-assault charges Aug. 2, around the same time he was suspended indefinite­ly from the Tigers’ football program for an unspecifie­d violation of team rules. Ingram was released Aug. 4 on $40,000 bond.

Serena seeded No. 17 for U.S. Open

Six-time U.S. Open champion Serena Williams was seeded No. 17 for the tournament this year, nine spots higher than her current ranking of No. 26. Williams was put one place behind older sister Venus.

Women’s backstroke record falls

Liu Xiang of China set a world record in the women’s 50-meter backstroke with a time of 26.98 seconds on her way to winning a gold medal in the Asian Games in Singapore.
