Threats land ex-OL Incognito in jail
Former NFL offensive lineman Richie Incognito bonded out of a jail Tuesday in suburban Phoenix after being arrested on charges he threatened to shoot employees of a funeral home Monday, authorities said.
Police in Scottsdale said Incognito, 35, had been booked on suspicion of misdemeanor charges of threats and disorderly conduct. He posted a $20,000 bond and has a pretrial conference Monday in Scottsdale.
Police said Incognito, who played 11 NFL seasons, was at the mortuary to make arrangements for his father, who died last weekend.
‘‘Incognito reportedly was upset with staff and began to damage property inside the business and shout at employees,’’ police spokesman Sgt. Ben Hoster said. ‘‘At several points during his contact with staff, Incognito threatened to retrieve guns from his vehicle and return to shoot the employees.’’
A police report showed officers later executed a search warrant on Incognito’s pickup truck and seized two Glocks, three rifles and a silencer for a handgun.
Falcons to sit Jones, Freeman again
Receiver Julio Jones and running back Devonta Freeman are healthy and practicing again, but they will be held out for the third consecutive preseason game when the Falcons visit the Jaguars on Saturday.
Coach Dan Quinn said the Falcons decided during the offseason not to play Jones and Freeman in preseason games, so it’s likely neither will suit up until the regular-season opener Sept. 6 at the Eagles.
Quinn cited the injury histories of Jones and Freeman as the reason to keep both players out of preseason games.
Ravens CB Smith suspended four games
The NFL suspended Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith for four games without pay for violating its personal-conduct policy. The suspension will last through the Ravens’ game Sept. 30.
The NFL suspended Steelers receiver Eli Rogers without pay for the season opener Sept. 9 against the Browns for violating its substance-abuse policy. He will be eligible to return to the roster Sept. 10.
This and that
Panthers coach Ron Rivera said rookie receiver D.J. Moore is remorseful after he was cited for driving 113 mph in a 65 mph work zone Aug. 10 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Rivera said Moore informed the team of his mistake immediately and apologized his dangerous driving.
The Titans agreed to a one-year contract extension worth a reported $7.8 million with receiver Rishard Matthews. Matthews, who is on the physically unable-to-perform list, has 118 catches for 1,740 yards and 13 touchdowns in two seasons with the Titans.
Former Giants receiver Victor Cruz, who spent part of training camp last season with the Bears, announced his retirement and said he will join ESPN as an NFL analyst. Cruz will contribute to variety of shows and will make his ESPN debut Wednesday.
