Pa. Catholic school drops cardinal’s name
HARRISBURG, Pa. — A Roman Catholic high school will shed the name of Washington’s archbishop, who was cited in a sweeping grand jury report as having allowed priests accused of sexually abusing children to be reassigned or reinstated while he was Pittsburgh’s bishop. The Diocese of Pittsburgh said Wednesday that Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl made the request to remove his name from Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School and that school and diocese officials accepted it. The sign in front of the suburban Pittsburgh school was discovered vandalized Monday.
U.S. rejects Afghanistan talks
WASHINGTON — The United States has rejected an invitation to join Russialed talks on Afghanistan because they are unlikely to help bring peace, a State Department spokesman said Wednesday, as the Trump administration prepared to appoint a diplomatic veteran as a new special envoy for the war-battered nation.
L.A. County prosecutors investigating another Spacey allegation
LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles County prosecutors are investigating allegations of a 2016 sexual assault by Kevin Spacey for possible criminal charges. Spokesman Greg Risling said Wednesday that a district attorney’s task force on sexual misconduct had received the case. It’s the second Spacey case the task force is considering. The first dates to 1992 and could prove impossible to prosecute because of statutes of limitations.
Warren posts 10 years of tax returns
BOSTON — U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren has posted 10 years of her tax returns online. It’s a possible signal that Warren may be laying the groundwork for a run for president in 2020.
Attempt to hack DNC database foiled
An attempt to break into the Democratic National Committee’s massive voter database has been thwarted, a party official said Wednesday, two years after Russian operatives sent the party into disarray by hacking into its computers. A web security firm using artificial intelligence uncovered the attempt. The DNC was notified Tuesday, it said.
