First a flood, then fireworks

- Joe Mauer

Ryan O’Hearn and Hunter Dozier hit back-toback home runs in the ninth inning against closer Cody Allen to lead the Royals to a 5-4 walk-off victory against the Indians on Friday night.

Dozier’s walk-off homer was the 79th in Major League baseball this season, one short of tying the 2004 season for most in MLB history.

Allen has blown four saves this season and let his ERA rise to 4.50.

The game was delayed 30 minutes after a pipe burst near Kauffman Stadium’s iconic outfield fountains, causing flooding on the right-field warning track. Water began leaking onto the field in the top of the fourth inning. Relievers in the Royals bullpen yelled to alert stadium officials to the problem, triggering the stoppage.

Mauer trails only Puckett on Twins’ hit list

Joe Mauer hit a single in the fifth inning of the Twins’ 7-1 loss to the visiting Athletics, giving him 2,086 hits, moving him past Rod Carew for second on the Twins’ all-time hit list. He trails only Kirby Puckett (2,304 hits). Mauer remains stuck at 999 career runs. Only two Twins players have scored more than 1,000: Puckett (1,071) and Harmon Killebrew (1,047).

Morales homers again

Kendrys Morales homered for the fifth consecutive game in the Blue Jays’ 4-2 victory against the visiting Phillies. Morales tied Jose Bautista for the club mark and is one away from tying Jose Cruz Jr.’s club mark of six games set in 2001.

Player moves

Outfielder Mike Trout returned to the Angels’ lineup and batted third against the visiting Astros. Trout, who leads the majors with a .459 on-base percentage, hasn’t played since Aug. 1. He was on the disabled list with a wrist injury when brother-in-law Aaron Cox died last week.

◆ Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman (left knee tendinitis) received an injection Friday and will be “reevaluated in a couple weeks,” manager Aaron Boone said, adding, “We’re optimistic that he’ll return in an impactful way this season at some point.”

◆ The Brewers demoted ex-closer and 2017 AllStar Corey Knebel to Class AAA Colorado Springs.

◆ The Rangers put pitcher Bartolo Colon (7-11, 5.45 ERA) on the 10-day disabled list because of a strained lower back.

◆ Jay Bruce has been reinstated from the disabled list after missing more than two months with an aching right hip, and the Mets plan to audition the veteran outfielder at first base down the stretch.
