-

After signing Monday, running back Adrian Peterson ran 11 times for 56 yards in the Redskins’ 29-17 loss to the visiting Broncos. Peterson carried the ball seven consecutive plays on one possession, and the 2012 MVP later picked up 15 yards on fourth-and-one.

Broncos safety Shamarko Thomas left the game with an eye injury and was hospitalized for a possible detached retina.

Newton escapes injury

On the opening drive in the Panthers’ 25-14 victory against the visiting Patriots, quarterback Cam Newton scrambled out of the pocket on third-and-nine before diving head-first and landing on his head after getting upended. Newton left game to be evaluated for a concussion but returned four plays later. He finished 11-for-17 for 142 yards.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was 12-for-18 for 102 yards. Brady’s personal trainer, Alex Guerrero, the source of a supposed rift between Brady and coach Bill Belichick last season, reportedly flew on the team plane.

Concussion for Engram

Tight end Evan Engram suffered a concussion in the Giants’ 22-16 victory against the Jets. In the Jets’ quarterback competition, rookie Sam Darnold was 8-for-16 for 86 yards, Teddy Bridgewater was 11-for-15 for 104 yards and Josh McCown did not play.

This and that

Browns quarterback Tyrod Taylor dislocated his left pinkie and bruised his hand in a 5-0 victory over the Eagles on Thursday, but he isn’t expected to miss any time. Coach Hue Jackson also said he doesn’t expect rookie starting cornerback Denzel Ward, the fourth overall pick, to miss “much time, if any” because of back spasms suffered in the game.

◆ Ravens rookie tight end Hayden Hurst, the 25th overall pick, reportedly will miss three to four weeks with a stress fracture in his foot.

◆ The Jets signed former Chiefs running back Charcandrick West.
