Posey to have hip surgery

-

Giants catcher Buster Posey will have hip surgery Monday in Colorado and will miss six to eight months.

“It’s something that needs to be taken care of,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “It’s the wear and tear of playing the game that’s caught up with him a little bit. When we get this thing rehabbed, I know Buster’s going to be happy to have this behind him.”

Posey, 31 and a six-time All-Star, was hitting .284 but had only 41 RBI and five home runs, his fewest since 2011, the year before Posey won the NL MVP award. He has thrown out only 17 of 59 base stealers this season.

Rockies pour it on late vs. Cardinals

Pinch hitter Matt Holliday launched his first home run of the season in the seventh inning, and Carlos Gonzalez sparked an eight-run eighth with a tiebreaking double to lead the Rockies past the visiting Cardinals 9-1. The loss snapped the Cardinals’ nine-game road winning streak. They had won four straight and eight of 10 overall.

Rockies starter German Marquez (seven innings, no runs, three hits) and Cardinals starter John Gant (seven innings, one run, three hits) became only the fifth pair of starters in the 23-year-plus history of Coors Field to throw seven innings and allow three hits or fewer.

Nationals shut out again

The Nationals lost 3-0 to the host Mets, marking the first time they have been shut out in three consecutive games since 2004, when they played in Montreal. The Nationals fell to 64-66, giving them more losses this year than in 2017, when they went 97-65 to win their second consecutive NL East title.

Morales ties Jays record

Designated hitter Kendrys Morales homered for the sixth consecutive game, matching Jose Cruz Jr. (2001) for the team record, in the Blue Jays’ 8-6 victory against the visiting Phillies, who have lost six of their last seven games.
