Israel reopening Gaza crossing

JERUSALEM — Israel’s defense minister has announced he will reopen the country’s main personnel crossing with the Gaza Strip following a week of relative calm along the border. Avigdor Lieberman said Sunday that after consultati­on with the country’s security agencies, he ordered the opening of the Erez border crossing on Monday.

Tesla driver crashes, says he was on Autopilot

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Authoritie­s say a Tesla driver, who said he thought his car was in Autopilot mode, crashed into the back of a firetruck in San Jose. The California Highway Patrol said the Tesla rearended a fire engine that was stopped with its emergency lights activated along US-101 around 1 a.m. Saturday. The 37-year-old driver, Michael Tran, told officers, “I think I had auto-pilot on.” Tran was later arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

Cops: 800 pounds of stolen lemons in car

THERMAL, Calif. — Authoritie­s said a man has been arrested in Southern California after deputies found about 800 pounds of stolen lemons inside his car. Riverside County sheriff ’s officials said 69-year-old Dionicio Fierros was arrested Friday and booked on a charge of theft of agricultur­al products. Deputies were investigat­ing recent farm thefts when they stopped Fierros’ car in Thermal on Friday morning.

Merkel opposes tougher climate goals

BERLIN — German Chancellor Angela Merkel is making clear that she opposes setting new, more ambitious European emissions reduction targets for 2030. She says the continent needs to concentrat­e on fulfilling the aims it has already set. The European Union wants to achieve a 40 percent cut in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels by 2030. Last week, EU climate chief Miguel Arias Canete told Germany’s dpa news agency that he plans to propose increasing that to 45 percent.
