Morales’ HR streak reaches 7

-

Blue Jays designated hitter Kendrys Morales set a team record by hitting a home run in his seventh consecutive game Sunday, becoming the seventh player in major-league history with a homer streak that long. The Blue Jays, however, lost to the visiting Phillies 8-3.

Dale Long, Don Mattingly and Ken Griffey Jr. share the big-league record with homers in eight consecutive games. Morales will have a chance to tie the record Monday against the Orioles’ David Hess in Baltimore. He already has homered against Hess during the streak.

Morales, who has homered eight times during his streak, extended his run with a two-run drive against Vince Velasquez in the third inning. Jose Cruz Jr. homered in six consecutive games for the Blue Jays in 2001.

After the game, Morales said the Hall of Fame had requested one of the bats he has used during the streak.

‘‘I’m really happy they want my bat,’’ he said. “It’s amazing what I’ve been doing.’’

Four doubles for Cardinals’ Carpenter

Matt Carpenter tied a franchise record with four doubles in the Cardinals’ 12-3 rout of the host Rockies.

Carpenter doubled twice in the Cardinals’ six-run first inning, then added one in the third and another in the seventh. The only other Cardinals player with four doubles in a game was Joe ‘‘Ducky’’ Medwick, who did it Aug. 4, 1937.

Astros’ McCullers to be in pen upon return

Astros manager A.J. Hinch said he doesn’t expect right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. (10-6, 3.93 ERA) to rejoin the starting rotation when he returns from a forearm injury because there isn’t enough time left in the season for him to rebuild his stamina. He said McCullers likely will work out of the bullpen when he comes back.
