Stocks soar to all-time highs on Mexico agreement
NEW YORK — Stocks soared on Monday after the White House said it reached a preliminary agreement with Mexico on replacing NAFTA. The Nasdaq composite index topped 8,000 for the first time. The S&P 500 is up 6.6 percent since the end of June, and, like the Nasdaq composite index and Russell 2000, it’s trading at all-time highs.
Foxconn gives $100M to university
MADISON, Wis. — Foxconn Technology Group announced Monday that it will invest $100 million in engineering and innovation research at the University of WisconsinMadison, making it one of the largest gifts in the school’s history that comes as the Taiwan-based electronics giant builds a factory near the Illinois border that would be the first of its kind in North America.
Toyota, Uber team on autonomous cars
DETROIT — Toyota will sink a half-billion dollars into Uber and work jointly with the ride-hailing giant to develop self-driving vehicles, a person briefed on the matter said Monday. The deal is a sign Uber no longer wants to go it alone in creating an autonomous driving system since one of its test vehicles killed a pedestrian this year.
Disney pact to raise minimum to $15
ORLANDO, Fla. — The proposed contract Walt Disney World’s unionized workers will vote on next week would increase the starting minimum wage by at least 46 percent over three years to $15 an hour, while enabling Disney to use more part-time workers, according to new details released Monday. A coalition of six unions representing Disney World workers is recommending its members approve the deal.
JetBlue raising bag-check fees
DALLAS — JetBlue Airways is raising fees for checking a bag or changing a ticket, a move that could prompt other airlines to raise their fees. Those who buy the lowest of JetBlue’s three fare classes will pay $30 to check a bag and $40 for a second bag, a $5 increase for each bag.
