Police: Man dies after being swept by wave into Lake Michigan

A 26-year-old man died Saturday morning after he was pulled from Lake Michigan on the North Side.

Raniro Calixto, of the Humboldt Park neighborho­od, was walking at North Avenue Beach at 5:35 a.m. when he was swept into the water by a wave, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner said.

Fire crews searched for Calixto along the lake, where waves were 10 feet high, for almost two hours before they found him about 7:30 a.m. near the 1300 block of North Lake Shore Drive, according to Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Frank Velez and the medical examiner’s office.

He was taken to Northweste­rn Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:04 a.m., according to authoritie­s.

An autopsy was scheduled to rule on a cause of death.

The National Weather Service warned of dangerous conditions along the lake this weekend. Large waves, high winds and flooding along lakeshore paths were forecast until Sunday night. The fire department warned people to stay off of shoreline rocks. David Struett

3-year-old falls from 3rd-story window

A 3-year-old boy was seriously injured Saturday evening when he fell from a window in the South Shore neighborho­od.

The boy fell from the third-story window about 6 p.m. in the 7600 block of South Coles Avenue, according to Chicago police.

He was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in serious condition, police said.

Man dies 8 years after shooting

A 45-year-old man has died from complicati­ons of a gunshot wound he suffered over eight years ago in the Austin neighborho­od on the West Side.

Michael O’Neill was 36 when he was sitting in a parked car about 1:50 a.m. on April 16, 2010, at 4840 W. Hirsch, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Someone fired shots striking him in the back, authoritie­s said then. David Struett

Park Ridge police looking for armed robber who stole $1K from gas station

Authoritie­s are searching for a male armed robber who stole approximat­ely $1,000 from a gas station Friday evening in northwest suburban Park Ridge.

Officers responded about 10 p.m. to the report of an armed robbery at a Shell gas station in the 900 block of Talcott Road, according to Park Ridge police.

They spoke with a store clerk who said that a male wearing all dark clothing with a hood, facial covering, possibly a bandana and gloves confronted her while she was cleaning the bathroom, police said.

The male showed a silver handgun and told the clerk to give him money, police said. The clerk went to the register and removed approximat­ely $1,000 in cash and was left unharmed while the suspect fled. Thomas Czaja

Aurora man receives 68-year prison sentence for child sex crimes

An Aurora man was sentenced Thursday to 68 years in prison for sexually assaulting a child he knew, as well as sexually assaulting a second victim.

Arturo Sanchez, 30, of the 600 block of Gates Avenue, sexually assaulted the child for more than five years, according to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office. He was found guilty in June for predatory criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony; six counts of criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony; and six counts of criminal sexual abuse, a Class 2 felony.

Prosectors presented evidence during a three-day trial that between April 2011 and February 2016, Sanchez had sexually assaulted and sexually abused two victims. Thomas Czaja

Woman charged with first-degree murder in fatal Gary stabbing

Delilah Latrice Hill, 26, was a handed first-degree murder charge Saturday related to a fatal stabbing that happened Friday in Gary.

Officers were called at 7:53 p.m. to the 900 block of North Wells Street for reports of two people needing medical attention and found 28-year-old Don Turner Sr. stabbed in the chest and Hill stabbed in her right forearm, according to police.

They were both taken to a Gary hospital, where Turner died at 9:08 p.m., police said. His death was ruled a homicide. Hill was treated before being arrested. David Struett
