Yzerman gives up Lightning GM job
Steve Yzerman stepped down as general manager of the Lightning after building them into a perennial contender, handing the reins to longtime assistant Julien BriseBois on Tuesday, just two days before training camp.
Yzerman will move to a senior adviser role working under BriseBois, and he said he was “100 percent committed” to the Lightning this season. Beyond that, his future is cloudy.
“I feel this change in role is important for me to allow me to spend more time with my family and to still make sure the Lightning is managed to the level everyone has come to expect,” said Yzerman, a Hall of Fame center with the Red Wings.
Yzerman, 53, spent the last eight seasons as GM, a tenure that included five playoff appearances, three trips to the conference final and an appearance in the 2015 Cup final.
SOCCER U.S. tops Mexico in testy friendly
Tyler Adams scored his first international goal four minutes after Angel Zaldivar was ejected for a studs-up tackle, and the United States rebounded from a poor first half for a 1-0 victory over Mexico in an exhibition in Nashville, Tennessee. It was the Americans’ first win over their rival in three years.
Mexico played a man short after Zaldivar took down U.S. captain Wil Trapp in the 67th minute. The match was heated in the second half, with Edson Alvarez given a yellow card for bumping Matt Miazga after Miazga mocked Diego Lainez, who was defending him despite being nearly a foot shorter.
BASEBALL Red Sox clinch with a bit of Sale help
The Red Sox became the first team to clinch a playoff spot, beating the visiting Blue Jays 7-2 after pinch hitter Brock Holt’s goahead homer gave them a boost in the seventh inning. Starter Chris Sale (inflammation, shoulder) came off the disabled list to pitch one scoreless inning, striking out two.
♦ Athletics left-hander Sean Manaea, who threw a no-hitter April 21 but has been on the disabled list twice since Aug. 26, will have season-ending surgery on his left shoulder next week. The A’s defeated the host Orioles 3-2 behind six solid innings from Mike Fiers.
♦ The Rockies’ Trevor Story became the first shortstop in history with 40 doubles, 30 home runs and 25 steals as the Rockies fell to the visiting Diamondbacks 6-3.
♦ Former Dodgers prospects Brandon Dixon and Scott Schebler homered, and the Reds improved to 6-0 this year against the visiting Dodgers in a 3-1 loss.
♦ Josh Donaldson was hitless in his debut for the Indians and Edwin Encarnacion reached 30 homers for the seventh straight season in a 2-0 win over the host Rays.
