Olsen suffers another tough break Baldwin likely won’t face Bears

-

The Panthers will be without three-time Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen and second-team All-Pro Bowl right tackle Daryl Williams for the foreseeable future.

The team announced Tuesday that Olsen re-fractured his right foot, which kept him out of nine games last season, in the Panthers’ 16-8 win over the Cowboys on Sunday. Olsen won’t have surgery and will be re-evaluated on a “monthly basis.” He’ll remain on the roster with the hope he can return later in the season, as he did a year ago.

Williams suffered an undisclosed knee injury and will need surgery. He’s likely headed for injured reserve. Williams tore the medial collateral ligament and dislocated the patella in his right knee in training camp but fought back to play in the season opener.

Rookie Ian Thomas is expected to replace Olsen in the starting lineup. Amini Silatolu is next in line to take over at right tackle. The Seahawks are likely to be without wide receiver Doug Baldwin for the game Monday against the Bears and possibly longer because of an injury to the MCL in his right knee.

Coach Pete Carroll was vague about the specifics but indicated that Baldwin could miss a couple of weeks. Baldwin was injured in the Seahawks’ 27-24 loss to the Broncos.

Without Baldwin, the Seahawks likely will emphasize their running game more. They had only 16 runs in 55 offensive plays against the Broncos.

Patriots add to WR stable

The Patriots signed wide receivers Corey Coleman and Bennie Fowler as they try to make do at the position until Julian Edelman returns from a four-game suspension. Coleman, a first-round pick of the Browns in 2016, was cut by the Bills. Fowler was cut by the Bears.

The team also signed running back Kenjon Barner after putting Jeremy Hill on injured reserve. Hill suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the Patriots’ 27-20 win over the Texans.

Falcons lose another top player

The Falcons put linebacker Deion Jones on injured reserve, taking a second 2017 Pro Bowl player from the defense in less than a week. The move comes after safety Keanu Neal was lost for the season with a torn ligament in his left knee.

Jones hurt his foot in the 18-12 loss to the Falcons on Thursday. Coach Dan Quinn said Jones will require surgery but is expected to return this season.

This and that

ESPN reported that the Raiders re-signed wide receiver Martavis Bryant after releasing him on cutdown day. His status regarding a potential suspension still is unknown.

◆ The Redskins re-signed wide receiver Brian Quick and put rookie receiver Cam Sims on injured reserve. Quick spent last season with the Redskins and was released Sept. 1.

◆ The Packers put receiver and return man Trevor Davis on injured reserve and claimed cornerback Deante Burton off waivers from the Falcons.
