Mets’ Wright to play Sept. 29

-

The Mets said Thursday that long-injured third baseman David Wright will return for the team’s final homestand.

The Mets said they plan to activate Wright, 35, when they return to Citi Field on Sept. 25 against the Braves. He is scheduled to play Sept. 29 — the second-to-last day of the regular season — against the Marlins.

It would be Wright’s first major-league game since May 2016. He has worked to return from a litany of neck, back and shoulder injuries that have required surgery. Although he’s not officially retiring, Wright isn’t expected to play after this season.

‘‘The way I feel right now and from everything the doctors have told me, there’s not going to be an improvement,’’ an emotional Wright said at a news conference when he was asked whether he might play beyond 2018. ‘‘So, yeah, I don’t see that as a possibility.’’

Arenado, Story make bit of history

Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado and shortstop Trevor Story entered the franchise record book with their home runs in a 10-3 victory against the visiting Diamondbacks.

Arenado’s 34th homer gave him 100 RBI and enabled him to become the fourth player in Rockies history to reach 30 homers and 100 RBI in four consecutive seasons. Story’s 33rd homer enabled him to break a tie with Troy Tulowitzki (2009) for the most in a season by a Rockies shortstop.

Dodgers put end to Cardinals’ hex

The Dodgers ended a five-game losing streak at the hands of the host Cardinals with a 9-7 victory. The Dodgers trail the Rockies by two games in the National League West race and the Cardinals by a game in the battle for the second NL wild-card spot.

Mariners have two starters down

The Mariners said left-hander James Paxton (pneumonia) and right-hander Felix Hernandez (hamstring) won’t make their scheduled starts this weekend against the Angels.
