Patricia will be glad to see familiar face

New coaches crapping out was the obvious trend in Week 1. Teams with firstyear coaches were 0-7 straight up and 1-6 against the spread last week, with only the Bears covering, despite a monumental collapse in a 24-23 loss to the Packers. Congratulations, Matt Nagy, you’re at the top of the NFL pledge class.

And many of them were ugly. The Bears were outscored 24-6 in the second half. Jon Gruden’s Raiders were outscored 23-0 in the second half against the Rams. Frank Reich’s Colts were outscored 24-7 against the Bengals. Mike Vrabel’s Titans lost as a favorite against the Dolphins. Steve Wilks’ Cardinals were down 21-0 early against the Redskins.

But Matt Patricia’s Lions outdid them all. They were the biggest favorite among the teams with first-year coaches at 6½ points over the Jets. They were at home. Patricia was the rare Belichick disciple to inherit a franchise quarterback, Matt Stafford. And he was facing a 21-year-old rookie starter in Sam Darnold.

But after the Lions scored on an interception on the first play, it was a disaster. (As it turned out, I was the big loser, picking the Lions to win by 31 points, 34-3; instead, they lost by 31 points, 48-17).

This week, it seems like Patricia is on the short end. He’s on the road. He’s facing former Patriot Jimmy Garoppolo, who figures to know more about Patricia’s defense than Patricia knows about Jimmy G.

But I won’t get fooled again. PICK: Lions 34, 49ers 17.
