How senators vote on Supreme Court nominee Kavanaugh will be revealing

So a former female clerk for Chief Justice John Roberts writes an op-ed about why women should support the current nominee (“Judge Brett Kavanaugh has earned women’s support” — Tuesday)?

That he would garner even one vote is a travesty.

Let’s all keep a very close eye on the U.S. Senate in the next few weeks. All those voting in favor of confirming a nominee for the highest court in the land who willingly does not tell the truth under oath will tell you all you need to know about those in favor. It should also speak volumes to you as to what your duty is in the upcoming November elections. Gary Fox, Mt. Prospect

Kavanaugh unsuitable for high court

The opinion piece on Brett Kavanaugh asserts that Kavanaugh has “earned” women’s support. The author’s reasoning is based on how he has hired “record” numbers of women during his career, regardless of their points of view. If he has given women the opportunity to work in his office and other government offices, I give him credit.

Where I do not give him credit is on his often shaky responses when asked questions about the all-important issue for women across the nation: the right of a woman to control her own body. Women exert this control when they are allowed to choose if and when they have a baby. This involves access to reliable birth control and safe abortions if all else fails.

The women whom Kavanaugh claims to have hired in astounding numbers are able to take part in those opportunities only if they do not have to worry about unplanned pregnancies. Dependable contraceptives and safe abortions for health or other reasons are necessary for women to take advantage of the opportunities given.

If Brett Kavanaugh does not come out as a strong advocate for the right of women to control their own reproductive lives, all else he says is a sham! Support for Roe v. Wade at the highest level is absolutely necessary! Relegating it to the states and allowing “religious exceptions” by employers will not do it.

The women of America need a Supreme Court whose members will fight for their right to fully participate in the American democracy and economy. The right of women to control their own bodies is necessary and non-negotiable! Brett Kavanaugh has yet to prove that he deserves to join our all powerful and absolute United States Supreme Court.
