Ohtani has Tommy John surgery

-

Angels general manager Billy Eppler said Japanese two-way star Shohei Ohtani had Tommy John surgery on his right (pitching) elbow Monday in Los Angeles.

It remains to be seen what the Angels’ plans for Ohtani are next season. The surgery likely will keep him off the mound until 2020, but he still might get significant time as the Angels’ designated hitter next season.

Eppler said it’s still too early to know how soon Ohtani will be available to hit in 2019.

Canadiens name Weber captain

The Canadiens named defenseman Shea Weber the 30th captain in franchise history.

Weber, 33, served as captain of the Predators from 2010 to 2016 before he was traded to the Canadiens for defenseman P.K. Subban. Weber replaces forward Max Pacioretty, who was traded last month to the Golden Knights.

♦ Sabres forward Scott Wilson will miss eight to 10 weeks after having surgery to repair a broken ankle suffered during practice Sunday. He had six goals and 14 points in 49 games after the Sabres acquired him in a trade with the Red Wings in December.

♦ The Blues acquired defenseman Jakub Jerabek from the Oilers for a conditional draft pick in 2020. Jerabek had a goal and three assists for the Stanley Cup-winning Capitals last season.

♦ The Stars acquired defenseman Connor Carrick from the Maple Leafs for a conditional draft pick in 2019. Carrick had four goals and 12 assists for the Maple Leafs last season.

♦ The Ducks claimed left wing Pontus Aberg off waivers from the Oilers. Aberg had four goals and 12 assists while splitting last season between the Predators and Oilers.

♦ Forward Scott Hartnell announced his retirement after 17 seasons. He had 327 goals and 380 assists in 1,249 games with the Predators, Flyers and Blue Jackets.
