Brannstrom leads Wolves to season-opening victory Packers WR Cobb out vs. Lions

Defenseman Erik Brannstrom scored 48 seconds into overtime to give the Wolves a 3-2 seasonopen­ing win against the host Colorado Eagles on Friday night.

Brannstrom, 19, a 2017 firstround pick by the Vegas Golden Knights, scored two goals and center T.J. Tynan added the other goal.

Goaltender Oscar Dansk had 27 saves to earn the victory while forward Tomas Hyka contribute­d two assists as the Wolves spoiled the Eagles’ AHL debut.

NFL

The Packers will be without at least one of their starting receivers at Detroit. Randall Cobb will miss his second consecutiv­e game with a hamstring injury. Davante Adams (calf ) Geronimo Allison (concussion) are listed as questionab­le.

♦ The family of late NFL star Junior Seau settled a wrongful death lawsuit against the NFL over the popular San Diego linebacker’s 2012 suicide. The plan pays up to $4 million to families of men like Seau, who were found after their deaths to have the brain deteriorat­ion chronic traumatic encephalop­athy, known as CTE.

♦ Jets defensive coordinato­r Kacy Rodgers is dealing with what coach Todd Bowles calls a “serious” illness and likely will miss the game against the Broncos.

♦ Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake is doubtful against the Bengals with a knee injury.

♦ Linebacker Vontaze Burfict is back on the Bengals’ active roster after serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performanc­e-enhancer policy.

♦ The Titans will be without linebacker Wesley Woodyard (shoulder) and safety Kenny Vaccaro (dislocated right elbow) against the Bills.

Redick lights up China Games

JJ Redick made all 10 of his shots (7-for-7 from three-point range) and scored 28 points and the 76ers downed the Mavericks 120-114 in the opener of the NBA China Games. Fans booed Redick every time he touched the ball, harboring hard feelings for a racist slur he used several months ago.

♦ Thunder guard Andre Roberson will miss at least two months after a setback in his recovery from left knee surgery.

Wilson appeals 20-game ban

The NHL Players’ Associatio­n has filed an appeal on behalf of Tom Wilson after the Capitals forward was suspended 20 games for an illegal check to the head on Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist in Washington’s preseason finale.

♦ Brandt Snedeker birdied the final two holes for a 7-under 65 and a three-stroke lead over Phil Mickelson and two others in the PGA Tour’s season-opening Safeway Open at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California.

♦ Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick will start 1-2 to kick off the round-of-12 playoff race on the mile concrete track at Dover, Delaware, after rain washed out qualifying. The field was set on points, giving the top dozen spots to the 12 playoff drivers.
