Texas gets past Oklahoma

-

Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger flashed the “Hook ‘Em Horns” sign to the ecstatic burnt orange end of the Cotton Bowl Stadium after his third rushing touchdown, and soon after that threw his second scoring pass.

A year after briefly putting the Longhorns ahead late in their Red River rivalry game against Oklahoma when he started as a freshman, Ehlinger had Texas ahead by three touchdowns going to the fourth quarter Saturday in Dallas.

But Ehlinger still needed one more drive to win the game, and delivered, setting up freshman Cameron Dicker’s 40-yard field goal with nine seconds left to give 19th-ranked Texas a 48-45 victory over the No. 7 Sooners after Kyler Murray had rallied them with three touchdowns in a six-minute span.

“The first three quarters were very impressive. But maybe that last drive was the most impressive because when we had really given up a lot of the energy and certainly in a tie ballgame, to let them back in,” Texas coach Tom Herman said of Ehlinger. “For him to go shut the door, with his teammates, that says a lot about his grit.”

Ehlinger was 24-for-35 passing for 314 yards, and ran 19 times for 72 yards. He converted third-andthree on Texas’ final drive with a four-yard keeper and his eight-yard draw to the middle of the field set up the winning kick in the highestscoring game in the 113-game series.

The Longhorns (5-1, 3-0 Big 12) have their first five-game winning streak since 2013 after winning the annual meeting at the State Fair of Texas, where the crowd of 92,300 was split 50-50, burnt orange and crimson, as always.

Oklahoma (5-1, 2-1) lost to the Longhorns for the third time in six seasons — this was the first time in that span Texas was ranked.

“Obviously, it’s not a good feeling. I feel like if I didn’t turn the ball over, we’d have a better shot at winning the game,” Murray said.

The Longhorns led 45-24 in the fourth quarter before Murray threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Lee Morris and ran 67 yards for a score on a one-play drive. Trey Sermon ran seven yards for the tying touchdown with 2:38 left.

Florida 27, LSU 19

Lamical Perine scored twice on short runs, including one after a trick play in the fourth quarter, and the No. 22 Gators (5-1, 3-1 SEC) beat the fifth-ranked Tigers (5-1, 2-1). Brad Stewart’s 25-yard interception return for a touchdown — the first pick Joe Burrow has thrown this season — essentially sealed the victory for host Florida.

The Gators scored all their points after 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow became the sixth player to be inducted into the school’s ring of honor.

Miami 28, Florida State 27

N’Kosi Perry threw four touchdown passes, and the No. 17 Hurricanes (5-1, 2-0 ACC) pulled off their biggest comeback ever against the visiting Seminoles (3-3, 1-3) by rallying from 20 points down.

Brevin Jordan’s 41-yard touchdown grab with just under 12 minutes left put Miami ahead for good, as the hosts came back from a 27-7 second-half deficit.

Alabama 65, Arkansas 31

Tua Tagovailoa passed for 334 yards and four touchdowns as the No. 1 Crimson Tide a (6-0, 3-0 SEC) ran their winning streak against the host Razorbacks (1-5, 0-3) to 12. It took one play for Alabama to set the tone as Tagovailoa hit tight end Irv Smith Jr. on a pass that Smith took 76 yards to the end zone 21 seconds into the game.

Mississippi State 23, Auburn 9

Nick Fitzgerald ran for 195 yards and two touchdowns, and the host Bulldogs (4-2, 1-2 SEC) got another dominant performance from its defense during an upset of the No. 8 Tigers (4-2, 1-2).

UCF 48, SMU 20

McKenzie Milton threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns as the No. 12 Knights (5-0, 2-0 American Athletic) extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 18 with a victory over the visiting Mustangs (2-4, 1-1).
