Celtics coast in NBA opener

Jayson Tatum scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and the Celtics held the visiting 76ers to 39 percent shooting en route to a 105-87 victory in the NBA season opener Tuesday.

The Celtics pulled away in the second half and won comfortabl­y despite getting a combined 17 points on 6-for-26 shooting from Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving. Hayward was playing in a game that mattered for the first time since suffering a gruesome injury to his left ankle in the Celtics’ opener last season.

Joel Embiid had 23 points and 10 rebounds and Ben Simmons 19 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists for the 76ers.

♦ Nets forward DeMarre Carroll will miss the start of the season after having arthroscop­ic surgery on his right ankle. The Nets offered no timetable for his return. Carroll averaged 13.5 points and 6.6 rebounds last season.

♦ The Wizards announced Kristi Toliver, a WNBA All-Star as a guard with the Mystics, will serve as coach Scott Brooks’ assistant for player developmen­t this season.

Bosa leaves Ohio State to focus on draft

Ohio State announced injured defensive end Nick Bosa has left school to focus on getting ready for the NFL Draft in the spring. Bosa, the younger brother of Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa, already had four sacks this season when he suffered a coremuscle injury Sept. 15. He had surgery five days later and didn’t return.

♦ Louisville tight end Kemari Averett was charged with first-degree wanton endangerme­nt and fourth-degree assault after allegedly putting a gun to his girlfriend’s head and threatenin­g to kill her over a missing laptop. He is in jail on $10,000 bond.

♦ Minnesota running back Shannon Brooks returned to the team after his arrest Sunday on suspicion of misdemeano­r domestic assault. No charges have been filed stemming from the alleged incident between Brooks and his male roommate.

♦ Illinois tight end Louis Dorsey posted on Twitter that he intends to transfer.
