U.S. asks Turkey for possible recording

WASHINGTON — The U.S. has asked Turkey for a recording that could reveal gruesome details of what happened to Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, President Donald Trump said Wednesday. But he’s not confirming there is any such recording, and he’s continuing to urge patience with Saudi Arabia. On Wednesday, the Washington Post published what it believes to be Khashoggi’s last column for the paper in which he warns that government­s in the Middle East “have been given free rein to continue silencing the media at an increasing rate.”

Trump orders 5% budget cuts

WASHINGTON — Dubbing it the “nickel plan,” President Donald Trump announced Wednesday he’s asking every Cabinet secretary to cut next-year’s budget by 5 percent. “Get rid of the fat. Get rid of the waste,” Trump said at a White House meeting. “And I’m sure you can do it.”

New problem in Weinstein case

NEW YORK — The sex-assault case against Harvey Weinstein was roiled again Wednesday. Det. Nicholas DiGaudio, whose alleged witness coaching prompted the dismissal of part of the case last week, is accused of urging one of Weinstein’s accusers to delete material from her cellphones before she handed them over to prosecutor­s.

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Mega Millions jackpot is now up to $900 million for Friday’s drawing. The estimated jackpot would be the second-largest lottery prize in U.S. history, behind the $1.6 billion Powerball prize in January 2016.
