Pay rule delays Wainwright deal

-

Multiple outlets reported right-hander Adam Wainwright’s contract with the Cardinals has been put on hold because it violates the maximumcut rule, and Wainwright will have to become a free agent before the agreement can be finalized.

The Cardinals announced Oct. 11 that they had reached a contract agreement with Wainwright, who just finished a five-year, $97.5 million contract that paid him $19.5 million annually. Under the collective-bargaining agreement, his guaranteed salary cannot be reduced by more than 20 percent if he remains on the roster continuously. That means he would have to be guaranteed at least $15.6 million.

Wainwright’s new deal reportedly contains a salary less than that figure, but the maximum-cut rule wouldn’t apply if he becomes a free agent after the World Series, then agrees to the new deal.

Wainwright (2-4, 4.46 ERA) was limited to eight starts this season by hamstring and elbow injuries.

Wizards center Dwight Howard sat out because of a lower-back injury that sidelined him for all of training camp and the entire preseason schedule.
