Mack: New week, same plan

Sits out practice again to protect right ankle

Outside linebacker Khalil Mack didn’t practice Wednesday as the Bears stuck to the same template they employed last week to protect his injured right ankle.

“It’ll be a day-to-day thing,’’ coach Matt Nagy said, ‘‘and we’ll kind of see how that goes.”

After Mack hurt his ankle against the Dolphins, he sat out practice on Wednesday and Thursday of last week.

Mack was limited Friday and listed as questionable for the Patriots, but he played 54 of the Bears’ 64 defensive snaps against New England.

He wasn’t himself because of the injury and because he had to drop into coverage against Tom Brady. Mack had one tackle in the Bears’ 38-31 home loss.

In five seasons, Mack has never missed a start. The Bears’ assertion that he didn’t further injure his ankle by playing against New England indicates that he’ll take the field against the Jets.

“We know when he’s out there that he’s going to give us everything,” inside linebacker Danny Trevathan said.

“I know he feels like he could’ve done a little more, that he’s not himself, but on defense, we have his back no matter what. We know he’s going to be ready when he’s going to be ready.

“We just have to make more plays. We have to pick up his slack in whatever aspect it is, and we have to make our plays.”

Jets coach Todd Bowles said he puts little stock in Mack’s last two weeks’ worth of film, in which he failed to get a sack while hampered by the injury.

“We know what he’s capable of doing, and we know what he can do,” Bowles said.
