TRUMP DECLARES ‘SUCCESS’
President calls Pelosi, McConnell, offers congratulations
WASHINGTON — Staring down the likely loss of one-party control in Washington, President Donald Trump declared Tuesday’s election results a “tremendous success” for Republicans as his party maintained its hold on the Senate while Democrats picked up GOP-held seats in the House.
Trump waited until late in the night to weigh in on the midterm vote, tweeting a succinct message that overlooked expected Democratic gains in the House, writing: “Tremendous success tonight. Thank you to all!”
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the president made a series of calls while watching the results late Tuesday.
Trump called to congratulate Democratic House Leader Nancy Pelosi as her party stood on the brink of recapturing the House of Representatives. Pelosi’s spokesman Drew Hammill said Trump called Pelosi to congratulate her and to note her tone of bipartisanship.
Sanders said Trump also called Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell “to congratulate him on historic Senate gains.”
Trump also called outgoing House Speaker Paul Ryan and Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
As for Republicans retaining control of the Senate, Sanders called it “a huge moment and victory for the president.”
Gov races tight in Wisconsin, Georgia
Late Tuesday, Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker was locked in a dead heat with Democrat Tony Evers, each at 49 percent. Georgia’s governor race was also too close
to call, with returns delayed.
Indiana: Democratic senator ousted
Republican Mike Braun won the Indiana Senate seat held by Democrat Joe Donnelly.
Utah: Romney wins
Republican Mitt Romney, the vanquished 2012 GOP presidential candidate, won the Utah Senate seat being vacated by the retiring GOP Sen. Orrin Hatch.
Stock futures steady
Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 were steady late Tuesday and early Wednesday as Democrats looked poised to gain control of the U.S. House.
