ND cruises past UIC in opener

Freshmen Nate Laszewski, Robby Carmody and Dane Goodwin were among five Notre Dame players to score in double figures as the youthful Irish cruised by UIC 8467 in Tuesday night’s season opener in South Bend, Indiana.

The 6-foot-10 Laszewski led the way with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench.

Carmody — who became the first freshman to start an opener for Notre Dame since Torin Francis in 2002 — added 11 points in 14 minutes. Goodwin finished with 10 points.

Marcus Ottey led UIC with 17 points. Tarkus Ferguson added 12.

Indiana 104, Chicago State 55

Romeo Langford scored a team-high 19 points in his college debut to lead host Indiana.

The Hoosiers led by as many as 49 points. Indiana benefited from a variety of Cougars’ mistakes and shortcomin­gs. The bench scored 51 points, just four points fewer than Chicago State’s total.

Kansas 92, Michigan State 87

Quentin Grimes scored 21 points in his college debut and Dedric Lawson added 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the No. 1 Jayhawks past the No. 10 Spartans in the season-opening Champions Classic.

The Jayhawks won their third straight in one of college basketball’s premier events.

Michigan State was led by Joshua Langford with 18 points and Kenny Goins with 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Spartans are now 4-21 all-time against No. 1 teams.

Michigan 63, Norfolk State 44

Jon Teske had 13 points, eight rebounds and four blocks as the No. 19 Wolverines gave John Beilein his 800th career coaching victory.

Purdue 90, Fairfield 57

Carsen Edwards scored 30 points and made seven three-pointers for the No. 24 Boilers. Purdue made just one of its first seven shots but shot 54 percent.
