14 TDs, 1,001 yards in seesaw slugfest
Jared Goff threw for 413 yards and four touchdowns and ran for a fifth, outside linebacker Samson Ebukam scored two touchdowns — one on a fumble return and one on an interception return — and the Rams overcame a monster game from Patrick Mahomes to defeat the visiting Chiefs 54-51 on Monday.
The teams combined for 1,001 yards of offense in what was the highest-scoring game in ‘‘Monday Night Football’’ history and the third-highestscoring game in NFL history. The Redskins (72) and Giants (41) combined for 113 points in 1966, and the Bengals (58) and Browns (48) combined for 106 in 2004.
‘‘It was a whirlwind,’’ Rams coach Sean McVay said. ‘‘I feel like I might need a couple of beverages to relax tonight, but it was great. This is what you love so much about the game.’’
Mahomes threw for 478 yards and six touchdowns, including two each to Tyreek Hill (10 catches, 215 yards) and Chris Conley, but he also threw three interceptions and lost two fumbles. He was intercepted on the Chiefs’ last two possessions when a field goal would have tied the score.
The Elias Sports Bureau reported the Chiefs became the first team among 217 in NFL history to score 50 points in a game and lose.
Quarterback news
Titans coach Mike Vrabel said quarterback Marcus Mariota is recovering from a stinger that knocked him out of the team’s loss Sunday to the Colts, not the elbow injury announced during the game.
Whether Mariota returns depends on how quickly he recovers from what Vrabel called a bad stinger after a hit to the head. Mariota was hurt when he was sacked late in the first half and didn’t return. It erroneously was announced as an injury to his elbow.
♦ The Redskins signed journeyman Mark Sanchez to back up quarterback Colt McCoy after Alex Smith’s season-ending broken right leg Sunday.
McCoy will start for the Redskins on Thursday against the Cowboys. Sanchez, who was a backup with the Bears last season, knows offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh from their time with the Jets.
♦ Bills coach Sean McDermott said quarterback Josh Allen will return to the starting lineup Sunday against the Jaguars. Allen missed four games after suffering an injury to his right elbow in Week 6 against the Texans.
♦ Dolphins coach Adam Gase said quarterback Ryan Tannehill made good progress in his recovery from an injured right shoulder during the bye week and might return Sunday against the Colts.
