After curious fake FG, Iowa wins with last-second kick

-

Miguel Recinos drilled a 41-yard field goal through a driving rain as time expired, and Iowa beat Nebraska 31-28 on Friday despite blowing a 15-point lead in Iowa City.

Mekhi Sargent ran for a careerhigh 173 yards and scored twice for the Hawkeyes (8-4, 5-4 Big Ten), who have won four straight over the Cornhuskers for the first time.

The Hawkeyes nearly blew this one big-time, though.

A curious decision by Iowa to fake a field goal at Nebraska’s 3-yard line failed, and it led to a 98-yard scoring drive from the Huskers to make it 28-20 with 13:57 to go. Martinez then ran in from three yards out with 3:22 left and found Kade Warner in the back of the end zone to tie it.

But star tight end T.J. Hockenson came through for Iowa with a 10-yard catch on fourth-and-eight with 42 seconds to go, and Recinos put it through the uprights after missing his previous attempt.

The No. 8 Knights lost quarterback McKenzie Milton to a serious leg injury but still trounced the Bulls to extend the nation’s longest winning streak to 24 games and complete a second consecutive undefeated regular season.

Milton hurt his right leg when he was tackled at the end of a fiveyard run in the second quarter. Darriel Mack Jr. replaced him and will probably make his second start of the year when the Knights (11-0, 8-0 American Athletic Conference) face Memphis next week in the conference title game. Coach Josh Heupel had no specific update on Milton’s condition, only saying he was in the hospital with a “traumatic” injury.

Myles Gaskin broke free for an 80-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, and the No. 16 Huskies won their second Pac-12 North Division title in three years by beating the No. 7 Cougars on a snowy night at Martin Stadium in Pullman, Washington.

Gaskin rushed for 170 yards and three touchdowns, a year after running for 192 and four scores against the Cougars. The Huskies (9-3, 7-2 Pac-12) will face Utah in the conference title game.
