Wake slips past Notre Dame

Brandon Childress scored 20 points, and Wake Forest pulled away from Notre Dame late to earn a 75-68 victory Tuesday in Atlantic Coast Conference play in South Bend, Indiana.

Childress scored 15 of his points on five three-pointers, and the Demon Deacons (10-15, 3-10) used a 9-2 run in the final minutes to break away from a 66-66 tie.

Olivier Sarr added 14 points and Jaylen Hoard 10, including a layup with 2:41 left that enabled Wake Forest to break the tie. The victory was only the Demon Deacons’ second in their last nine games.

T.J. Gibbs scored a game-high 23 points on 8-for-12 shooting for the Irish (13-13, 3-10), but he scored only six points after halftime. John Mooney added 16 points and nine rebounds and Prentiss Hubb 11 points for Notre Dame.

Purdue 48, Indiana 46

Matt Haarms tipped in the rebound of a miss by Carsen Edwards with 3.2 seconds left to lift the No. 15 Boilermake­rs (19-7, 12-3) past the intrastate rival Hoosiers (13-13, 4-11) in Big Ten action in Bloomingto­n, Indiana. It was the lowest-scoring game between the schools since they combined for 78 points on Jan. 21, 1950.

Ryan Cline was the only player in double figures for Purdue with 11 points. The Boilermake­rs overcame a 4-for-24 shooting performanc­e by Edwards to win their third consecutiv­e game at Assembly Hall for the first time in their history.

Romeo Langford, who was sick in the locker room at halftime, led Indiana with 14 points despite not taking a shot in the second half. Juwan Morgan added nine points and 11 rebounds for the Hoosiers, who lost their fourth consecutiv­e game overall and fifth in a row in the series.

Maryland 66, Iowa 65

Bruno Fernando tipped in a rebound with 7.8 seconds left to boost the No. 24 Terrapins (20-7, 11-5) to a Big Ten victory against the No. 21 Hawkeyes (20-6, 9-6) in Iowa City.

Anthony Cowan Jr. scored 17 points and Fernando and Elvin Ayala 11 each for Maryland, which held Iowa to 32.8 percent shooting. Jordan Bohannon scored 14 points and Isaiah Moss 12 for the Hawkeyes, who missed two shots — one by Bohannon and one by Moss — in the last five seconds.

Penn State 95, Nebraska 71

Lamar Stevens scored 29 points to fuel the Nittany Lions (10-16, 3-12) to a Big Ten rout of the Cornhusker­s (15-12, 5-11) in State College, Pennsylvan­ia. It was Penn State’s highest-scoring game of the season. James Palmer Jr. led Nebraska with 24 points.
