Brewers pull even with Cubs

Mike Moustakas hit his 35th home run of the season, Lorenzo Cain also went deep and the Brewers beat the Padres 3-1 Tuesday night in Milwaukee to keep up their playoff push with their 11th win in 12 games.

The Brewers are tied with the Cubs for the NL’s second wildcard spot and are two games back of the Cardinals in the NL Central.

Moustakas teed off on a 1-2 pitch from reliever Matt Strahm in the bottom of the seventh after Hunter Renfroe’s 32nd home run in the top of the inning tied the score at 1-1.

Nationals increase lead for top wild-card spot

Howie Kendrick finished a double shy of hitting for a cycle, Patrick Corbin struck out 11 while giving up two unearned runs and five hits in six innings, and the Nationals beat the Cardinals 6-2.

The Nationals increased their lead for the NL’s top wild-card spot to 1½ games over the Cubs and Brewers. Daniel Hudson got the last six outs for his fourth save.

Biggios now 2nd father-son duo to hit for cycles

Rookie Cavan Biggio hit for the cycle in the Blue Jays’ 8-5 victory against the Orioles. Biggio homered in the third inning, singled in the sixth, doubled in the eighth and tripled in the ninth. He drove in four runs and scored three times. Biggio and his father, Craig, a Hall of Famer with the Astros, are the second father-son duo in major-league history to hit for the cycle, joining Daryle and Gary Ward.

The Astros’ Justin Verlander picked up his major league-leading 19th win in a 4-1 victory against the Rangers.

◆ The Yankees’ Luis Severino pitched four scoreless innings in his injury-delayed season debut in a 8-0 victory against the Angels.

Pirates’ Vazquez arrested on child sex charges

Pirates All-Star closer Felipe Vazquez was arrested on multiple felony charges, including statutory sexual assault, soliciting a child and pornograph­y, and was placed on administra­tive leave by MLB.

A two-time All-Star pitcher from Venezuela, Vazquez is 5-1 with a 1.65 ERA and 28 saves for the Pirates this season.

Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis has a fracture of the hook of the hamate bone in his right hand and is done for the season.
