Iowa man charged in shooting outside mall

An Iowa man is accused of fatally shooting two people outside of River Oaks Center mall in south suburban Calumet City.

Dajon M. Lewis, 18, is charged with two counts of first degree murder, according to Calumet City police.

Lewis is accused of shooting Christin Ross, 18, and 17-year-old Tyrell Wade, outside of the River Oaks mall Oct. 10, according to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

Wade, Ross and a witness confronted Lewis at the mall over an incident that happened in 2018, according to a court document.

A physical altercatio­n broke out outside of the mall entrance, and Lewis allegedly told the group “just wait, just wait right there” as he walked away, the document states. The group walked back into the mall and tried to go through a different exit, the document states. A witness yelled “gun” after seeing Lewis in the parking lot with a gun in his hand. Lewis allegedly fired at Wade, Ross and three others, the document states. Ross and Wade were struck in the head and died days later.

Three witnesses allegedly identified Lewis as the shooter. He was taken into custody in Gary, Indiana, on Thursday after a short traffic pursuit, police said. He was denied bail at a hearing Tuesday. Sun-Times Wire

Man in wheelchair shot

Two people were in custody after a woman allegedly shot a man in a wheelchair Tuesday in Englewood on the South Side.

A man and woman entered an apartment about 10:25 a.m. in the 6100 block of South Green Street and confronted a man in a wheelchair, according to Chicago police.

The woman took out a gun and shot the 30-year-old man in the lower leg, police said. It was unclear what sparked the confrontat­ion. The man was taken to a hospital in good condition. Officers arrested a 32-year-old man and the alleged shooter, a 34-year-old woman, police said. Charges were pending. David Struett

Person with gun arrested at O’Hare

A person was arrested Tuesday at O’Hare Airport after authoritie­s found a loaded gun in a carry-on bag. Officers were called a little before 8 a.m. to a checkpoint, according to Chicago police. The officers saw an image of a firearm on the X-ray screen and found a loaded 9mm handgun in a bag, police said. The person, who had a valid FOID card and concealed carry license, was arrested, police said. Charges were pending.
