ROOKIE FEATS: KAHLIL BELL STARTS WITH A BANG

-

Kahlil Bell isn’t even the best Kahlil in Bears history anymore. But like Khalil Mack, Bell made a memorable first impression with the Bears.

Two days after being promoted from the practice squad as a rookie running back from UCLA in 2009, Bell turned his first NFL carry into a bonanza — a 72-yard run in the second quarter against the Eagles at Soldier Field.

Sprung by fullback Jason McKie and helped by hustling receiver Johnny Knox blocking downfield, Bell’s run was the longest by a rookie in franchise history and the longest by a Bears running back since Neal Anderson’s 73-yarder in 1989.

Bell finished with four carries for 80 yards in that game, a 24-20 loss. He was a fringe player in three seasons with the Bears (2009, 2011-12) and had 148 carries for 633 yards and no touchdowns. His only NFL touchdown came on a 25-yard reception from Caleb Hanie in a 38-14 loss to the Seahawks in 2011 at Soldier Field.

But at least he had a moment to remember. Here are some other memorable debut moments in Bears history:

• Matt Forte — Scored on a 50-yard touchdown run against the Colts on his fifth NFL carry in 2008. Finished with 123 yards on 23 carries in a 29-13 victory.

• George McAfee — Ran 44 yards with a fake punt the first time he got the ball in his hands in his NFL debut against the Packers in 1940. The third time he got his hands on the ball, he returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to spark a 41-10 season-opening rout.

• Devin Hester — Returned a punt 84 yards for a touchdown in his first NFL game — and fifth career punt return — in a 26-0 rout of the Packers in 2006.

• Harlon Hill — Caught a 64-yard touchdown pass from Zeke Bratkowski on the second offensive possession of his NFL debut against the Lions in 1954.

• Charley Wade — Had pass receptions of 73 and 43 yards from Gary Huff to spark a 17-9 upset of the Lions in his first NFL game in 1974.
