TOP 10 BEARS-LIONS GAMES
1. Path to the title, 1963 — Trailing 7-3 at halftime, the Bears score three touchdowns in the second half, with Dave Whitsell’s 39-yard interception return for a touchdown with 25 seconds left clinching a 24-14 victory in the season finale and a berth in the NFL Championship Game. (The Bears beat the Giants 14-10 for their eighth NFL title.)
2. Nagurski’s TD pass wins it, 1934 — In what was considered the de facto NFL title game, the 11-0 Bears beat the 10-1 Lions 19-16 on Nov. 29 in Detroit, with fullback Bronko Nagurski throwing a one-yard touchdown pass to Bill Hewitt in the fourth quarter for the winning score. (The Bears were upset by the Giants 30-13 in the title game.)
3. Casares runs wild, 1956 — Two weeks after the Bears lost to the Lions 42-10 in Detroit, Rick Casares sets a franchise record with 190 rushing yards as the Bears beat the Lions 38-21 for the Western Division title and a berth in the NFL Championship game. (The Bears lost 47-7 to the Giants.)
4. “Williams breaks out of the pack . . .”, 1980 — After Vince Evans rushes for a tying touchdown on the final play of regulation to cap a frantic drive, Dave Williams returns the overtime kickoff 95 yards for a stunning game-ending touchdown on Thanksgiving Day at the Silverdome — the first NFL game to end on the first play of overtime.
5. Tragedy strikes, 1971
— Three plays after catching a 32-yard pass, Lions wide receiver Chuck Hughes, 28, collapses after an incomplete pass to tight end Charlie Sanders in the final minutes of the fourth quarter and dies of a heart attack on Oct. 24. He is the only player to die in a game in NFL history.
6. Mornhinweg takes the wind, 2002 — After the Bears score 10 points in the final 2:33 to tie, Lions coach Marty Mornhinweg takes the wind after winning the overtime coin flip — and Jim Miller drives the Bears 43 yards in 13 plays for Paul Edinger’s 40-yard field goal to win 23-20.
7. The Calvin Johnson Game, 2010 — In the season opener at Soldier Field, Lions receiver
Calvin Johnson catches an apparent 25-yard touchdown pass from Shaun Hill with 24 seconds left, but the play is ruled incomplete because Johnson did not “complete the process of the catch” when he instinctively releases the ball after hitting the ground. The Bears won 19-14.
8. Cade McNown: Franchise QB, 1999 — Named the full-time starter in Week 15 of his rookie season, Cade
McNown responds with 301 yards and four touchdown passes — three of them to wide receiver Marcus Robinson — in a 28-10 victory against the Lions on Dec. 14 at Soldier Field. A year later, his Bears career was over.
9. Ditka wills the Bears to victory, 1986 — Stymied the entire game (156 yards, 3.3 per play) and down 13-6 in the fourth quarter on ‘‘Monday Night Football’’ at the Silverdome, Mike Ditka is on steam and the Bears respond — driving 74 yards for a touchdown and 50 yards for a field goal on their final two drives (6.2 yards per play) to win 16-13 and improve to 13-2.
10. Bears pick Stafford clean, 2018 — Safety Eddie Jackson returns a Matthew
Stafford interception 41 yards for a tie-breaking touchdown and Kyle Fuller intercepts Stafford in the end zone with 1:07 left as the rejuvenated Bears beat the Lions 23-16 at Ford Field to move to 8-3 with their third division victory in 12 days. ✶
