Louisville became the fourth top-ranked team to lose this season, joining Michigan State, Kentucky and Duke.

The Cardinals (9-1) easily played their worst game of the season, shooting an absymal 34 percent from the floor and leading scorer Jordan Nwora had only 14 points. Coach Chris Mack let loose his frustration in the Jimmy V Classic game in the final 90 seconds and was whistled for a technical.

Moretti hit two consecutive threes midway through the second half for an 11-point lead that gave the Red Raiders (6-3), who lost to DePaul last Wednesday, the space they needed.

♦ Penn State became the fifth unranked team to beat a top-5 program in this upsetfilled season, getting 15 points and 11 rebounds from Mike Watkins to beat visiting No. 4 Maryland 76-69. The Nittany Lions (8-2, 1-1 Big Ten) led for all but 1:54.

The Irish (7-3), who had six players in double figures, had a program-tying 33 assists on 41 baskets.

♦ Wayland Baptist guard J.J. Culver had a performance for the ages, becoming just the second player in NAIA history to reach the 100-point mark in a game after leading his Pioneers to a 124-60 rout over SW Adventist in Plainview, Texas. Clarence “Bevo” Francis of Rio Grande (Ohio) is the only other player in NAIA history to have a 100-point game, scoring an NAIA-record 113 points against Hillsdale in 1954. Culver is the brother of former Texas Tech star Jarrett Culver.
