Chatwood gets work

Fifth-starter favorite Tyler Chatwood gave up a solo homer to Trent Grisham with one out in the first and pitched around a pair of walks to avoid further damage.

After walking Manny Machado following a walk, Chatwood got a double-play grounder from Eric Hosmer in the first. A leadoff walk to Wil Myers in the second almost cost him a run, but right fielder

Jason Heyward’s sliding catch ended the inning and stranded the runner at third.

Bryzzo packs 1-2 punch

The new-look top of the order produced a quick Cubs lead when Kris Bryant led off the game with a bloop single to right and

Anthony Rizzo drove the next pitch into the opposite-field gap in left for an RBI double.

Bryant was retired leading off the third on a sharp grounder just inside the bag at third, with Rizzo then lining a single to right. They were a combined 3-for-6 on Friday after going a combined 1-for-11 with three walks in their first three starts.

Player to watch

Non-roster outfielder Ian Miller was back in the lineup after showing off his speed during a two-hit performance Thursday that included a hustle double that led to a run on a sacrifice fly.

“Very intriguing,” manager David Ross said. “We haven’t had a guy like him around here for sure, with that little speed dynamic . . . . He’s definitely opened some eyes around here. We’re still very early. But . . . when you’re talking about that 26th man, Ian’s definitely in that mix.”

Saturday at the park

Don’t expect to see Bryant, Rizzo or Willson Contreras anywhere near Sloan Park early in the day Saturday after starting in the rare spring night game. But plenty of big-league regulars are in the lineup, including Kyle Schwarber, Ian Happ and Steven Souza Jr. On deck Brewers at Cubs, Mesa, 2:05 p.m. Saturday, MSN, Freddy Peralta vs. Yu Darvish.
