Off-duty CPD officer shoots person who opened fire: police
An off-duty Chicago police officer shot a person Sunday in Forest Glen on the Northwest Side after the person opened fire on him, according to Chicago police.
About 8:30 a.m., the officer was heading into work and noticed someone “tampering with a vehicle” in the 5200 block of North Lawler Avenue, police said. He identified himself as a police officer and attempted to intervene, but the person fired shots in his direction, Chicago police said. The officer returned fire, and the person fled in a waiting car.
The person later showed up at St. Bernard Hospital with a gunshot wound to the hip, police said. The person’s condition was stabilized. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting, police said. The officer who fired his weapon will be placed on administrative duty for 30 days, per policy.

Shots fired at cops in Austin
Two teenage boys were in custody after allegedly firing shots at Chicago police Sunday in Austin on the West Side.
Officers responded to a call of a person with a gun about 7:15 p.m. in the 800 block of North Waller Avenue and found two teenage boys who ran into an alley, firing shots, according to Chicago police. No one was struck, and the officers didn’t fire back, police said.
The boys, ages 14 and 16, were taken into custody without further incident, police said. Two weapons were recovered.
Scooter rider injured in Lake View
A scooter rider was seriously injured Sunday in a crash in Lake View on the North Side.
The scooter was side-swiped by a vehicle about 7:35 p.m. in the 2500 block of West Belmont Avenue, according to Chicago fire officials and police. The 49-year-old man riding the scooter was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious-to-critical condition, officials said.
