REPORT: CUBS-CARDS LONDON SERIES CANCELED

- Daryl Van Schouwen

The England-based newspaper the Sun reported Thursday that the Cubs-Cardinals series scheduled for June 13-14 in London has been canceled.

Major League Baseball hadn’t made an announcement, but event organizers made the decision because of the coronavirus pandemic.

MLB already has canceled the Mexico Series( Diamondbacks Pad res) and the Puerto Rico Series (Mets-Marlins), which were scheduled for April.

The Cubs and Cardinals were set to become the second set of MLB teams to play in London after the Red Sox and Yankees played there last season.

Rizzo has ideas for downtime

Anthony Rizzo had some words of advice and encouragement for fans missing out on Opening Day:

Stay active. Make the most of the downtime caused by the coronavirus. Exercise your body and your brain. Get into a routine. And don’t waste your time.

“We were supposed to be flying out from spring training, all excited for the start of a new season and on the plane to Milwaukee for Opening Day,” the Cubs first baseman wrote in an essay for ESPN. “As the weeks go on, all of us are going to be missing baseball more and more. I miss playing already. I miss being around the guys. It’s why I believe you have to keep your brain moving in some way.”

Rizzo acknowledged the “strange time” athletes and fans young and old are experiencing. He emphasized that isolation is everyone’s way of “being a hero” but encouraged people to keep in touch.

Rizzo is at his home in south Florida.

Maples sent down

The Cubs trimmed their spring roster to 38 by optioning right-hander Dillon Maples to

Class AAA Iowa.
