Rose, Varner out front as PGA resumes

Justin Rose and Harold Varner shared the lead at 7-under 63 after the first round of the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas, with Justin Thomas among those a stroke back after the first PGA action in three months because of the coronaviru­s pandemic.

Ryan Palmer, a Colonial member who raised money for COVID-19 relief efforts during the shutdown, was chosen to hit the first official shot to end the hiatus.

Already eerily quiet without fans in attendance, Colonial came to a standstill at 8:46 a.m. when everyone on the course paused for a moment of silence for the death of George Floyd and the outrage it has sparked worldwide on racial injustice.

Carroll admits to Kap regret

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told reporters he regrets not signing quarterbac­k Colin Kaepernick in 2017 after Kaepernick became a free agent. Carroll also denied that the Seahawks passed on him again in 2018 over concerns that Kaepernick would continue to kneel during the national anthem. The coach said he believes at least one team is interested in signing him now.

♦ The NCAA football oversight committee finalized a plan for an extended preseason that would include an additional two weeks for teams to hold walkthroug­hs. Most major teams are set to kick off their seasons around Labor Day.

Fire learns tournament foes

The Fire were drawn into Group A in the “MLS is Back Tournament,” which will begin July 8 in Orlando, Florida. They were joined by Eastern Conference foes Inter Miami, Nashville SC, New York City FC, Orlando City SC and the Philadelph­ia Union. The Fire will play Miami, Nashville and NYCFC in the group stage. The tournament schedule will be announced later.
