Delle Donne to be paid to sit
Reigning WNBA most valuable player Elena Delle Donne wrote in The Players’ Tribune on Wednesday about her disappointment with an independent medical panel’s decision not to excuse her from the upcoming season with full pay because of her decadelong battle with Lyme disease.
The Mystics later said they would pay Delle Donne whether she plays or not.
Delle Donne was denied because the disease isn’t included on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s list of underlying conditions that could put someone at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
Delle Donne wrote the panel’s ruling would force her to decide whether ‘‘to risk my life . . . or forfeit my paycheck.’’
