Fans at NFL games must wear masks

The NFL an­nounced Wed­nes­day that if sta­di­ums are able to host fans this sea­son, face masks will be manda­tory.

Un­like the other three sports, foot­ball doesn’t have a league-wide pol­icy on al­low­ing fans. It ap­pears the NFL will al­low teams to de­cide for them­selves in­stead. Nearly one-third of the league plays in states cur­rently suf­fer­ing a spike in coro­n­avirus cases.

With the NFL mov­ing to­ward can­cel­ing the pre­sea­son, the first game will be the Sept. 10 sea­son opener fea­tur­ing the Tex­ans at Chiefs. The Bears open Sept. 13 at the Lions.

Jets owner Woody John­son is re­port­edly un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion after be­ing ac­cused of mak­ing sev­eral racist and sex­ist com­ments dur­ing his time as an am­bas­sador to the United King­dom.

North­ern Illi­nois’ sea­son opener Sept. 5 against Rhode Is­land was can­celed. Rhode Is­land, which is part of the Colo­nial Ath­letic As­so­ci­a­tion, can­celed its sea­son last week be­cause of COVID-19.

Toledo coach Ja­son Can­dle tested pos­i­tive for the coro­n­avirus.

Michi­gan State is paus­ing work­outs after a staff mem­ber tested pos­i­tive for COVID-19.
